How to Love Your Corporate Headshots

The best corporate headshots look like you on a good day, not you in a costume with a smile you never use. With a bit of planning and clear direction on set, you can leave the session with images you recognize and want to post everywhere!

Set your goal first. Where will the image live? LinkedIn, the company site, a speaker card or press kit? That choice drives crop, orientation and background so the final photo fits perfectly. Choose clothing you love and treat it that way; press the lapels, cut off stray threads, brush off your darling pet’s fur. Skip loud herringbone or tight stripes that can cause awkward light patterning on camera.

You should also think about brand colour, without necessarily trying to match it exactly. Consider whether your brand colours are warmer or cooler and select something to wear that doesn’t clash. Keep your jewellery minimal (it can reflect the camera’s light in weird ways), and plan to have your hair and makeup done if that is something that makes you feel more confident. Don’t overdo it – remember, you want to look and feel like yourself! Don’t worry about your glasses; we can make sure they don’t look shiny on film.

Collaborate With Your Corporate Photographer

Talk through your plan with the photographer to explain what these photos will be used for, and how you want people to see you. Do you want to look approachable? In charge? Reliable?  If there are past headshots you’ve loved or hated, tell your photographer!

We can also let you know some classic poses and answer the dreaded question of what to do with your hands, so always feel free to ask questions or ask to be directed. Small tweaks like holding a notebook, stacking your shoulders over your hips, and smiling with the eyes before the whole face (don’t worry, we’ll show you what that means!) can make a world of difference.

It’s always okay to ask to see a quick preview so you can fine tune your hair, clothing or expression. Try three micro-variations for each setup: eyes to the lens, just above the lens, then past the camera. The more options, the more likely you are to see the best version of yourself on camera.

People respond to images that feel honest and natural, and our job is to make the process of looking naturally perfect a pleasant one. Let’s work together for your next brand shoot!
